Some expats bring their stuff to Mexico and rent or buy an unfurnished home, and some decide to sell or give away all the trappings of life in their home country. My choice was to bring what I could carry in several carloads, starting with the essentials (clothing, bed linens, kitchen and table ware, computer, and dog) and rent furnished for a while until I figured out what area of my city, San Miguel de Allende, that I wanted to settle in. Then instead of bringing my large items, I put my artwork and deep-dark-winter clothes in storage, sold or gave away all the furniture and appliances, and purchased furniture, rugs, window coverings here in Mexico.
If you plan to bring furniture, appliances, etc., from another country, you’ll need a professional moving company, and possibly also storage services. Here are some well-vetted recommendations for movers that will go anywhere in Mexico as far as I know, from anywhere in the continental U.S. (and maybe Canada). They’ll explain the menage de casa (list of goods you can bring duty-free in a one-time move) and help you to create one. I’d like to add moving companies that will bring case goods and appliances from other countries, too, so please write to me if you have moved to Mexico from the UK, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, India, South America or elsewhere and have a company to recommend.
